The Institute for the Design of Advanced Energy Systems (IDAES) Integrated Platform was recently awarded a prestigious R&D 100 Award! This award honors the 100 most technologically significant products introduced in the previous year. The IDAES Integrate Platform enables rigorous modeling and optimization capabilities to increase efficiency, improve sustainability, reduce costs, and increase revenues for advanced energy systems.

Notre Dame Prof. Alexander Dowling along with graduate students Xian Gao and Alejandro Garciadiego contributed to the collaboration with researchers at the National Energy Technology Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of West Virginia. Specifically, the Notre Dame team created new multiscale modeling capabilities to study the complex interactions between energy system design and electricity market operations. As part of the IDAES integrated platform, these new models allow researchers to understand the best way to design, optimize, and operate new electricity generation sources such as renewables, energy storage, or advanced combustion with carbon capture to best meet the needs of the current and future U.S. energy infrastructure.
